How Much To Turn Up Curtains?

Are your curtains so long that they are constantly sweeping up grime from the floor? Here’s how to turn them up.

Turning up curtains is the kind of job that you ought to tackle if you are a professional. If you are not confident with a needle and thread or a sewing machine and you have expensive curtains, tackling this project yourself is perhaps unwise. Shortening the length of an expensive curtain often means removing some of the material from the bottom. Without good hemming, this leads to frayed, split ends which may or may not be spirit-level straight.

Here at Paul James Blinds, we have years of experience in finding and delivering the best blind solution for your window. Therefore, our number 1 answer to how much you should turn up your curtains is that you opt for blinds instead. Blinds from Paul James Blinds are ideally made to measure for each of your windows. They fit seamlessly, especially if you choose a Perfect Fit blind. They are the perfect compliment to any style or shape of window, or any type of property… but we digress.

Here’s how much you should turn up your curtains, and how much you should expect to pay if you hire in a professional to do the job for you.

How to Work Out How Much to Turn Up Curtains?

The simplest way to work out how much to take off your curtains is to hang them as you normally would and get out the tape measure. Measure the distance from the floor up to where you want the curtain to end. This distance is the amount of material you will remove.

Take the curtains off the rail and give them a wash before you begin. You can skip this part but it’s good to do both at once for time’s sake. When you have them washed and cleaned press them with an iron. This gives you an accurate measurement. Measure the distance up from the bottom of the curtain twice before you cut. Leave a few inches for hemming.

It’s helpful to measure several points along the bottom of the curtain, then connect the points you make to mark the measurement. Iron this point back on itself, remembering you will be sewing the back of the curtains. Sew in a straight line over the piece you ironed back flat on itself. Only cut when you are sure.
